On March 16, 2021, the CHTFWI welcomed representatives from CASS Housing, Friendship House Fayetteville, and Movin’ Out to talk about their housing models.

David Buuck, founder and Executive Director of CASS Housing in Fort Wayne, IN, shared their three living styles: independent, family (daily assistance), and family plus (24 hour support). David’s family lives in a house with independent self advocates. The Buuck family lives on one side of the house, and on the other side, three members with disabilities live in their own suites. David also shared plans for CASS Gardens, a hydroponic garden that would provide income and employment skills training for their members.

We then heard from Andy Rind and Tara Hinton of ServiceSource discuss their Friendship House in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Friendship House is an intentional living community that pairs young adults with student professionals. Their model provides private apartments that are integrated in the community, and a communal, outdoor meeting space called The Grange.

Kathyrne Auerback, Executive Director of Movin’ Out, shared how they partner with families and people with disabilities to create affordable homes. Movin’ Out serves people with any permanent disability, and they provide Home Buyer Education, Down Payment Assistance, Safety and Modifications, and more.

We learned so much about different housing models from our speaker panel in March. You can watch the recording of the meeting here.
