Exploring Assistive Technologies & Housing

Join CHTFWI for a webinar about assistive technology and housing. The goal of the webinar will be to describe a broad array of assistive technologies available to individuals with IDD within their homes that may be able to provide for additional safety, communications, independence, and supportive care.

Barb Silver-Thorn, Ph.D., Head of Innovation & Assistive Technology, AbleLight

Barb Silver-Thorn directs AbleLight’s Innovation Lab in downtown Milwaukee, promoting awareness of technology supports to enhance independence, safety and security. She manages the assistive technology program for AbleLight’s group homes and coordinates the smart home technology partnerships with the Cornerstone Village independent living communities.

Prior to joining AbleLight, Barb served as biomedical engineering faculty at Marquette University, teaching undergraduate and graduate students. She conducted research to aid persons with disabilities, collaborating with prosthetists, orthotists, physical and occupational therapists, and physiatrists.

Barb earned her Ph.D. in biomedical engineering from Northwestern University, a master’s degree in chemical, bio and materials engineering from Arizona State University, and a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from Northwestern University. She holds an Assistive Technology Professional (ATP) certification from the Rehabilitation Engineering and Assistive Technology Society of America (RESNA).
